There Is No Right Way to Grieve

Grief is one of the most personal experiences we can go through, yet many people wonder if they are grieving the "right" way.

The truth is, there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Every person's experience is unique. Your relationship, your loss, your personality and your life circumstances all influence how grief affects you. No two grief journeys will ever look exactly the same.

While grief is most commonly associated with the death of someone we love, it can also follow many other significant life changes and losses.

Grief Can Follow Many Different Types of Loss

Grief may be experienced after:

  • The death of a loved one

  • The end of a relationship or marriage

  • A miscarriage or fertility challenges

  • Losing a beloved pet

  • Health problems or a life-changing diagnosis

  • Chronic pain or changes in physical ability

  • Losing your job or retiring unexpectedly

  • Financial hardship

  • Major life transitions

  • Moving away from family, friends or familiar places

  • Losing your sense of purpose or identity

Any significant loss can trigger grief, even if those around you don't recognise it.

Your grief is valid, regardless of what caused it.

Grief Doesn't Always Look Like Sadness

Many people expect grief to mean crying every day.

In reality, grief can show up in many different emotional, physical and mental ways.

You might experience:

  • Sadness

  • Anger or frustration

  • Guilt or regret

  • Anxiety

  • Emotional numbness

  • Relief after a long illness or difficult situation

  • Confusion

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Feeling disconnected from others

  • Unexpected emotional waves

Some days you may feel relatively okay.

The next day, something as simple as a song, smell or photograph can bring overwhelming emotions flooding back.

This doesn't mean you're going backwards.

It simply reflects how grief naturally works.

The Physical Impact of Grief

Grief affects far more than your emotions.

Many people notice physical symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Fatigue and exhaustion

  • Changes in appetite

  • Muscle tension

  • Brain fog

  • Reduced motivation

  • Increased stress

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

When we experience loss, our nervous system is also adapting to a new reality.

Everything that once felt familiar may suddenly feel different.

This is why grief can feel exhausting both emotionally and physically.

Why Grief Can Feel So Overwhelming

Loss often changes far more than we initially realise.

It can affect:

  • Your daily routines

  • Your relationships

  • Your confidence

  • Your sense of safety

  • Future plans

  • Your identity

  • Your understanding of the world

Part of grieving is learning how to rebuild life while carrying the memories of what has been lost.

This process takes time.

There is no shortcut.

You Don't Have to "Get Over" Grief

One of the most harmful messages people receive is that they should eventually "move on."

Most grief specialists now recognise that healing isn't about forgetting.

It's about learning to carry the loss differently.

Over time, the intensity often softens.

The pain becomes easier to manage.

The memories remain, but many people find they become less painful and more meaningful.

Healing doesn't mean letting go of the person or experience.

It means creating space to continue living while honouring what has been lost.

How Hypnotherapy Can Support the Grieving Process

Hypnotherapy cannot erase grief and it shouldn't.

Grief is a normal and healthy response to loss.

However, when grief becomes overwhelming or feels impossible to process, hypnotherapy may help support emotional healing.

Many clients find hypnotherapy helps them:

  • Process unresolved emotions

  • Reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Release feelings of guilt or self-blame

  • Improve sleep

  • Feel calmer and more emotionally balanced

  • Build emotional resilience

  • Reconnect with hope for the future

  • Honour their loved one while continuing to move forward

The goal isn't to forget.

The goal is to help grief feel less overwhelming so you can continue living while still holding onto the love and memories that matter most.

Be Gentle With Yourself

Grief has no timeline.

There is no finish line.

No perfect way to cope.

No deadline for healing.

Some days will feel lighter.

Others may feel unexpectedly difficult.

That doesn't mean you're failing.

It simply means you're human.

Wherever you are in your journey, know that your experience is valid and you don't have to face it alone.
